Woman finds rare pet parrots brutally slaughtered in her backyard

A retired New York City cop living in Colorado says she was horrified when she returned home last week to find five of her pet parrots brutally murdered – three of them by dismemberment.

Cherie Morales claims that someone broke into the backyard aviary at her Bennett, Colo., home Wednesday and mercilessly slaughtered five of her seven rare Greater Vasa parrots, local television station ABC 7 reported.

“When I saw that gate open, I immediately thought, ‘Oh no,’” the 55-year-old told ABC 7. “Then, I started seeing bodies and bodies without heads.”

Two of the birds died from broken necks, while three were killed by decapitation.

‘Who would do something like this? Take an animal this sweet and break their necks?’ Morales told ABC 7.

“The three birds who were the sweetest of all of them had their heads ripped off from the neck,” Morales said. “Their wings were pulled off. These birds had been brutalized past that.”

David Lewis, who helped his distraught neighbor clear up the tiny corpses, said that the aviary looked like a “battle” ground.

“One of the first things I saw was a head of one of the birds lying on the ground and feathers everywhere,” Lewis told ABC 7. “It was really gruesome … like the aftermath of a war scene.”

Two African gray parrots remained in the aviary unharmed, which Morales believes is a sign that the Greater Vasas were targeted since everyone was aware that they were her favorites, ABC News reported.

Morales’s two other Greater Vasa parrots escaped. One had since returned.

The former New Yorker believes that the other, named Matisse, is still in the area because she has heard his bird call.

“These birds are so easy, so trusting,” Morales said. “I have always prided my house on being a sanctuary for whatever person or critter need to come in.”

The Adams County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the incident.

Morales, in the meantime, has taken to Craigslist to offer an $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
